A guy at the coffee shop in Boise told me his 'password123' got his email hacked

He said it happened after he used the same password on a forum that got breached... what's the simplest way you explain to people why that's a bad idea?

That's a solid metaphor from betty_ward, using one key for everything. I actually saw a video from some cybersecurity guy on YouTube who compared it to putting all your valuables in one cardboard box then leaving it on the sidewalk. One breach and everything you own is up for grabs. Same with passwords. My brother's buddy lost his whole Instagram account that he used for his side business, all because he reused his email password on some random coupon site that got hacked. Once they get into your email, it's basically over because they can reset every other password you own. Better to use a slightly different password for the important stuff at minimum, like your email and bank stuff.

Using one password everywhere is like using one key for your house, car, and bank.

My old roommate used the same password for his email, his wifi, and even his online banking. I mean, it was literally just his dog's name and the year he was born. One time his email got hacked and they drained his checking account because he used that same password for his bank login too. It took him six months to get the money back from the bank. I could never sleep at night doing that.
