That dev in Austin told me grid gaps are a crutch, now I'm torn

Met up with a frontend dev at a meetup in Austin last Friday. He said my 12-column grid with 24px gaps was lazy and that I should be using subgrid and negative margins for tighter control. I laughed it off at first, but then I tried his approach on a card layout and honestly? It looked sharper. Now I'm second guessing every gap I've ever set. Anyone else had someone completely flip how you think about spacing in grid?
