Client told me my grid looked 'too rigid' and honestly they were right

I was using 12-column grids for everything and after they pointed out it made every layout feel like a spreadsheet, I swapped to auto-fill with minmax and now my designs actually breathe has anyone else had to unlearn strict column thinking?

Why is a strict grid always a bad thing though? I've seen designers throw out all structure just to make something "breathe" and end up with a messy page where nothing lines up. A 12-column grid is a tool, not a cage - it's what you put inside it that matters. Most users don't notice the grid, they notice when text doesn't begin in the same vertical spot across sections. Clients will say something feels stiff, but what they really mean is the spacing is too even everywhere, not that the columns themselves are the problem.

Grids give structure, rigid thinking is the real issue.
