CSS grid auto-fit wrecked my card layout in Safari

I built a responsive card grid with auto-fit minmax(220px, 1fr) and it looked great in Chrome, but Safari on my iPhone stacked everything into one narrow column until I switched to explicit media queries. Has anyone else had to abandon auto-fit for critical layouts, or is there a workaround I'm missing?

Yep, auto-fit has burned me more times than my own cooking. I switched to explicit media queries after my grid turned into a sad pile of stacked blocks on Safari and I just accepted the extra CSS. It feels like giving up, but honestly, my layout actually works now and that's a win in my book.
