Someone told me my CSS cat looked "too flat" and it changed everything

Was at a meetup in Denver last month. Guy walks by my laptop while I'm tweaking a gradient cat. Says "your shadows are all wrong, that's why it looks flat." I was offended at first. But he was right. I was using one shadow color for everything. Now I layer three shadows on each element. My art actually has depth now. Anyone else get a random critique that actually improved their work?

your shadows are all wrong" - wow, that's some blunt honesty right there. I gotta ask though, how did you figure out the right colors for the three layers? I always end up just guessing and it still looks muddy.

Doesn't it just come down to picking a cool blue for shadows and a warm yellow for the light and layering them in?
