Overheard someone say CSS art is just "fancy boxes"

I was at a coffee shop last week, and this guy was explaining to his friend what his coworker does for fun. He said it's just stacking boxes with different colors and borders. Made me laugh at first. But then I got thinking about my own CSS pieces. There's truth to it if you strip it way down. But the creativity comes from what you do with those boxes. The angles, the layering, the transforms. It's like saying a painting is just smearing colored dirt on cloth. Technically true but misses the whole point. Anyone else ever get this kind of reaction from people who don't code?

Honestly, I used to be that guy. I'd look at CSS art and think "why not just use a drawing program?" Then I tried making a simple isometric cube with pure CSS for a project. Took me three days and like 50 boxes with different skew and rotate values. That cube looked terrible but I learned more about positioning and transforms in those three days than in months of building regular websites. Now I get why people do it. It's not about the end result looking like a real image. It's about proving you can bend this layout language into something it was never meant to do. Kinda like building a car engine out of paperclips and rubber bands.

Start with "Fifty boxes!" - I read that part twice just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. That kind of patience is something I admire because most people would have given up after the first ten boxes. Sounds like a crash course that left a real impression on you though.
