Appreciation post: a stranger at a CSS conf taught me more in 5 minutes than 2 years of tutorials

Ngl, I was at a tiny CSS meetup in Austin back in March, and this older dev noticed me squinting at my transform-origin code on my laptop. He just pointed at my screen and said "stop fighting the grid, let the container do the math for you." Then he spent maybe 5 minutes showing me how he uses aspect-ratio and object-fit to position little CSS planets instead of hardcoding every pixel. I'd been manually tweaking clip-path polygons for months, and this one trick made my whole nebula scene click together. Has anyone else had a random hallway conversation completely reshape how they approach a CSS art piece? I'm curious if I should go to more meetups just for that kind of luck.

Clone those clip-path polygons and burn them right in front of that guy next time you see him. That's legitimately painful to hear, because I wasted a solid month hand-placing every star in a galaxy thing with absolute positions before someone finally told me about background-position percentages. The whole grid trick sounds so obvious now but it's like your brain just refuses to see it until some stranger says the exact right sentence. I've had two or three of those hallway moments at random JS meetups and they beat any 40 dollar video course I've ever bought. Go to every meetup you can, even the boring ones, because one good hallway chat pays for a year of bad talks.
