The beta reader who said my dialogue all sounded the same
Honestly, I thought I had a decent ear for dialogue until about 3 months ago. A beta reader from a local writing group in Austin told me every single character in my 60k word draft used the same sentence rhythm and the same kind of sarcastic quips. At first I was defensive, ngl, but then I read a random scene aloud and heard it. Everyone was basically me with different names. So I went back and rewrote each character's lines with a different speech pattern, one talks in short clipped bursts, one rambles with run-ons, one asks everything as a question. It took two full weekends but the next critique session felt completely different, people actually pointed out which character was speaking without looking at the tags. Has anyone else gotten that feedback and figured out a trick to keep voices distinct without overdoing accents or catchphrases?
