The advice to 'kill your darlings' nearly ruined my short story

A writing group veteran in Portland gave me this tip after my first draft. She said cut every sentence I loved that didn't push the plot. I took it too far and trimmed 2,000 words from a 5,000 word piece, leaving it flat and lifeless. The next draft I kept the weird metaphors and slow build, and it got picked up by a local zine. Has anyone else found that rule works better in theory than practice?
