That beta reader's note about my prologue was dead wrong, cost me 2 weeks

My critique group in Portland kept saying my first chapter dragged, so I cut it down from 12 pages to 4. Then I sent it to a paid editor who asked why the main character lost her backstory, and I realized the group was just being polite about pacing. I spent 14 days rebuilding the chapter with more texture, and now it's the part people quote back to me at readings. Has anyone else had a beta reader's feedback that you followed and then totally regretted?
