My villain origin arc started with a library book swap
Our writing group does this thing where we swap first chapters blind. No names. Just pages. I got this one about a detective who solves crimes by smelling people's laundry. Weird premise but the writing was tight. So I gave feedback saying the laundry thing was a fun hook but needed more stakes.
Turns out it was the group founder's manuscript. She didn't say anything at the meeting. But next week her prompt was "write a scene where someone's critique comes back to haunt them." Then she had us do a trust fall exercise that somehow involved me being blindfolded and spun around 3 times.
My next submission got returned with one note: "too literal." I still don't know if that was about my writing or my critique. Has anyone else accidentally insulted the person running the group? How do you recover without quitting the whole hobby?
