My main character's name changed halfway through my draft
Honestly, I was about 15,000 words into a story set in Portland when I realized my lead, a guy I'd called 'Leo', just didn't fit. It felt wrong every time I typed it. I went back and used the find-and-replace tool to swap every 'Leo' for 'Evan', and the whole thing clicked into place. Has anyone else had a character's name just stop working on you?

Ugh, my characters do that to me all the time.

So you just hit find and replace and it was fine? I'd be terrified of missing one and having a weird Leo/Evan hybrid haunting the final draft. Did you have to reread the whole thing super carefully to catch any slip-ups, or did the swap actually go clean?

I've actually had it go wrong in a different way... I changed a name once and missed a couple spots, and it created this weird character split where the guy had two names in different chapters. @barbara429 you are totally right to be scared, but what saved me was reading the whole thing out loud after the swap. That's the trick nobody talks about, your ear catches the wrong name way faster than your eyes do. I also had an issue where the new name rhymed with something else in a key description, and it threw off the whole rhythm of the scene. So it's not just about finding all the old names, it's about making sure the new one actually fits the voice of the story. Sometimes a name change fixes one problem but creates another you never saw coming.
