My laptop died mid prompt and I lost 2 hours of work, now I write everything on index cards first
Last Tuesday my laptop crashed while I was drafting a short story about a guy who inherits a broken clock shop. I had about 1,200 words written straight into a Word doc and when the screen went black at 9pm, I just sat there staring at it. The thing is, I never saved once because I was in the zone and thought I would remember everything. I did not remember everything. I spent the next hour trying to retype it from memory and it came out way worse, all the good lines were gone. So now before I open my laptop, I grab a stack of index cards and write the whole scene out by hand first, one card per beat. It takes longer and my hand cramps up, but at least nothing disappears when the power blinks. Has anyone else switched to writing longhand after a tech disaster, or do you just hit save every 30 seconds like a normal person?
