My high school teacher said to write what you know, but I think she was wrong

Tbh, she told me my fantasy story about a dragon in New Jersey was silly and to stick to realistic stuff, so I shelved it for like 8 years. Ngl, I finally wrote that dragon story last year and it got picked up by a small online magazine. Anyone else get advice that held them back from trying a genre?

That "write what you know" line gets twisted. My shop teacher in high school told me I'd never be able to run my own business because I was too quiet. Took that as a challenge, not a rule. Some people give advice based on their own limits, not yours.

My friend's prof said romance was trash, now she's a bestseller.

That's the best kind of revenge, honestly.
