I walked out of a Tuesday night writing group in Portland with one index card, and it killed my prompt hoarding for good
I used to keep a huge pile of prompts, like 300 of them, in a folder on my laptop. Then about 8 months ago I sat in on a writing group at a cafe on Alberta Street in Portland and watched a guy pull one index card out of his pocket. That was his whole system, one card he rewrote each week, and everyone in the room worked off it instead of scrolling. I felt kind of dumb sitting there with pages of ideas I never actually used. So I went home and deleted the folder, all of it, and now I keep one prompt on an index card taped next to my desk. I write one sentence on the back about what I did with it, and that sentence is the only thing that carries over to the next card. The pile was never the problem, the pile was me hiding from the actual writing. What do you all do with a prompt you like but never use, do you toss it or let it sit there judging you?
