I got stuck on a fantasy story for two months until I tried something dumb

My main character was a chosen one with a magic sword, and I just couldn't make him interesting. After reading a writing book, I forced myself to write a scene where he fails to open a pickle jar without using his powers. It sounds silly, but that tiny moment of normal frustration gave him a personality my plot never did. Has anyone else fixed a flat character with a really small, everyday problem?

Totally get that. I once fixed a boring detective by writing him struggling to assemble cheap furniture.

Actually, that's a great way to show character.
