A writing group leader in Tulsa said a flash fiction piece has 1,000 words max and I've been wrong for 3 years
I joined a little prompt group at a coffee shop in Tulsa last week and the leader dropped a number that wrecked me. She said flash fiction is capped at about 1,000 words, and most of what she sees works best under 500. I've been writing what I called flash pieces at 2,500 words for 3 years, so basically I've been writing short stories this whole time. She also said a prompt should leave the character stuck in one moment, not cover a whole life. That one stung because my last piece summed up 40 years in 6 paragraphs. Now I'm rewriting a prompt about a guy waiting at a bus stop after a rainstorm and trying to keep it under 300 words. What word count do you all actually stick to for flash, and does your group count the title or not?
