A librarian in Tulsa gave me a prompt on a napkin and it cracked open my whole story
I was at the downtown Tulsa library about 2 weeks ago, kind of hiding from the rain and poking at a half dead story I'd been fighting with for a while. I told the woman at the desk I was stuck, and she grabbed a napkin, wrote "write the scene where your character eats alone but someone keeps filling their water glass," and slid it over. I sat in the corner for 40 minutes and ended up with 3 pages I actually liked, way more than anything I wrote all week. It made me think the best prompts come from weird tiny moments, not big vague stuff like "write about loss." What's the strangest place a prompt idea has hit you from?
