Why does nobody warn you about studio acoustics before you build

An old recording engineer I met at a session in Nashville told me to spend my money on room treatment first. Said gear doesn't matter if your room sounds like a bathroom. I ignored him. Bought a $2000 mic instead. Now I hear flutter echo on every take and I'm kicking myself.

dude i feel your pain so hard. i did the exact same thing bought a fancy ribbon mic and set it up in my untreated basement. sounded like i was recording inside a metal trash can. my tip is grab some cheap moving blankets and hang them at reflection points behind your mic and on the walls. it won't look pretty but it'll kill that flutter echo instantly and you can save up for proper panels later. also try putting a thick rug down if you have hard floors that'll help a ton. seriously your $2000 mic will sound like a $200 mic in a bad room so fix that first.

Man that Nashville engineer was basically shouting the secrets of the universe at you and you went and dropped two grand on a mic instead. Classic move. I did the same thing except mine was a vintage tube mic and my room had this perfect tile floor and glass windows setup. Sounded like I was recording in a public restroom with the echo and all. Moving blankets work for sure but man your recordings will still have this weird dead blanket vibe until you get proper broadband panels. At least your expensive mic will sound amazing once you fix the room. Eventually.
