Warning: my old art teacher's 30 second thumbnail rule saved my client pitch last week
Ten years back in Portland, my community college art teacher, Mrs. Alvarez, made us do 30 second thumbnails before any bigger drawing. I thought it was a waste of time and blew it off for years. Last week a coffee shop client needed a new menu board design by Friday and I was stuck on where to put the logo. I tried her trick, 4 tiny pencil sketches in about 2 minutes, and the second one just worked. The owner picked that same layout on the first try and paid me $350 with zero revisions. I have been doing full comps in Illustrator first for a decade and this beats it for early ideas. How do you all get unstuck when a client gives you total freedom?
