My first tablet was a Wacom Intuos and it took me like three weeks before I stopped feeling like I was drawing with a bar of soap, lol. What finally clicked for me was forcing myself to only use one brush and one layer for the first month, no undo either. @alice_barnes35 that paper trick is actually smart, I bet it helps with the slippery feel too. I also turned off all the pressure sensitivity settings at first and just drew basic circles and lines till my hand got used to the surface. Now I can't even imagine going back to paper for rough drafts.

Oh man, that Nashville trip probably forced your hand hard... I bought my first tablet after a similar last-minute mess and the trick that saved me was just using it like a regular sketchbook at first. Don't jump into fancy settings or layers right away. Map out rough shapes and lines on the screen like you would with pencil and paper. One thing that helped was taping a piece of paper over the screen to get that scratchy feel while I figured out the pressure sensitivity.
