Pro tip: my audio interface was set to the wrong sample rate for 7 months

Spent a full afternoon trying to fix crackly recordings before realizing my interface and DAW were fighting at 44.1k vs 48k, has anyone else wasted hours on a single dumb setting?

Start by opening the system sound settings on your computer too. I had a similar issue where Windows was quietly resampling everything to 48k in the background, and my DAW was set to 44.1k. It wasn't until I went into the advanced sound panel and set the default format to match my project that the crackling stopped. Another thing to check is that USB power fluctuations can actually mess with sample rate sync on some budget interfaces if they're plugged into a hub instead of directly into the motherboard.

Oh man, was your issue with the sample rate mismatch too? I spent like three days once thinking my preamp was dying. Turned out my interface's control panel had a hidden setting for "prefer 48k" that overrode whatever I set in the DAW. I finally fixed it by opening the manufacturer's software, setting the sample rate there first, THEN launching the DAW. That locked everything in. Definitely worth checking if your interface has its own software panel, most do.
