My mentor told me to stop taking every project that came through the door

I thought it was crazy advice for a new studio, but after turning down a low-budget branding job in April, we landed a much bigger client the next week. Has anyone else found that being more selective actually helped them grow?

Wow, that's like my old boss's "good, fast, cheap" rule...

Our first year, we said yes to everything and nearly burned out on small logo jobs. Last fall, I started checking if a project fit our new focus on packaging design. I turned down a website update for a local shop, and that freed us up to pitch for a regional food brand. It felt scary, but like @sarah_johnson46 hinted, you can't be everything to every client. That choice let us do better work for people who value it.
