Met an old-school illustrator at a studio in Nashville last spring
I was helping a buddy clean his shop space near Music Row and this older guy came in looking for scrap cardboard. He said his name was Frank and he'd been doing hand-drawn album covers since the 70s. He showed me how he still mixes his own ink by eye, no pantone swatches or anything. Took maybe five minutes but it stuck with me how he talked about trusting your hand more than the tool. Anyone else run into someone who made you rethink your whole process just by how they worked?

That's the kind of thing that sticks with you though... trusting your hand over the tool. Makes you wonder how much we overcomplicate stuff.

And that's exactly why I started keeping a well-worn brush and only mixing paint on site, helps me stay grounded in the real craft.
