Heard my buddy say 'every studio should have a designated messy table' and now I get it

I was at a coworking space downtown last week and overheard this graphic designer talking to his friend about how his studio has a table where they just pile up all their junk. Like sketches, half done prints, old markers, random paint tubes. I always thought I needed to keep my whole workspace clean and organized to be productive. But after 2 years of running my little studio out of my apartment, I've spent so much time cleaning up between projects that I lose momentum. That messy table idea lets you just shove stuff there and keep working on whatever's hot right now. Has anyone else tried having a designated chaos zone in their studio or am I just messy by nature?

That reminds me of this painter I used to share a studio with, she called her messy table "the compost pile" and would just toss everything there until it looked like a disaster zone. One time she forgot about a sandwich in there for like two weeks and we only found it because of the smell. Totally different situation but yeah the chaos zone thing works if you can stand looking at it.
