Had to pick between running my studio's files on one shared drive or keeping each machine separate, and the choice bit me
Six months ago I had a small design shop running out of the spare room, three people, three computers, and no shared setup at all. Every file lived on whoever's machine made it, so when my main designer left in January we spent almost two weeks digging her stuff off a drive she took with her. After that I sat down with two choices: drop about $1,400 on a proper shared server setup, or keep it simple and just sync everything through one cloud folder. I went with the cloud folder because it was cheaper and took an afternoon instead of a weekend. It worked okay for about three months, and then we hit a version mess where two of us had edited the same logo file and the sync just picked a winner with no warning. I lost a full afternoon of work on a client project, and honestly I'm still a little salty about it. Now I'm thinking the server was the right call after all. Has anyone here run a shared drive for a tiny studio and actually been happy with it? I want to hear the good and the bad before I spend the money again.
