A client in Austin said my mood boards were too pretty, so I changed my whole process

Last month at a pitch, the marketing director told me 'your work looks like a Pinterest dream but nothing here feels buildable.' It stung, but she was right. I was hiding weak ideas behind nice fonts and soft gradients. Now I show rough wireframes and blank page outlines first, then add the polish after we agree on the structure. It's slowed down my presentation prep, but the feedback conversations got way more useful. Has anyone else had to strip back their visual style to get better client input?

Three pitches in, my wireframes look like my dog drew them.
