Tried greasing my swing bearing less and my rotation got tighter, which makes zero sense
I run a 60 ton at a yard near Newark and for 3 months I was hitting the swing bearing fitting on my lunch break like clockwork, maybe 4 pumps a shift. Then we got slammed on a steel erector job in June and I skipped it for 9 shifts straight. Rotation got smoother and the growl I'd been hearing on slow swings went away. Pulled the manual after that and the spec says 2 pumps every 50 hours, I was doing like 200x that. Guess I was packing the seal and pushing grease past it. The old heads on my crew just shrugged and said everybody overthinks the lube chart. Anybody else find out they were doing way more maintenance than the book actually calls for?
4 pumps a shift for 3 months and the book says 2 pumps every 50 hours? That is a wild gap. You were basically pumping a tube of grease into that bearing every week for nothing. I'd be worried about where all that extra grease went, like did it blow out the seal and get dirt back in? My gut would say pull the fitting and check, but maybe the smooth rotation already tells you it's fine.
