That windy Tuesday on the Mackinac Bridge job
I mean, I've been running cranes for 18 years now, but that one day in October 2022 still stands out. We were setting steel on the north span near St. Ignace and the gusts hit 42 mph by noon, which is way over our 25 mph limit. The crew chief kept saying, 'one more pick, we're almost done,' but I called it after the third swing nearly put a beam into the guardrail. That shutdown cost us 6 hours and the contractor was not happy. Has anyone else had to walk away mid-job when the weather turned, even with the boss pushing back?
