That old timer who told me to ignore wind ratings was dead wrong

Guy named Ray at the local union hall in Portland told me the wind ratings on a 50-ton Grove were just suggestions. Said he'd been picking in 40 mph gusts for decades. First time I tried it last month I nearly lost a 12,000 lb steel beam. Shook the whole cab. Had to abort and drop it back down. Cost me a whole day and a $2,500 penalty on the job. Anyone else get bad advice from guys who 'been doing this forever'?

Did you mention this to Ray after it happened? Those old-timer stories usually leave out the close calls and the days they had to walk away. Sounds like you did the smart thing cutting it loose even with the penalty.
