Ran my 40 ton with the tagline choked up instead of fully extended and shaved 20 minutes off every pick
Last Tuesday I was setting precast panels at a job site in Tulsa and the foreman kept rushing me on cycle time. For two weeks I had been running my tagline all the way out like I always do, thinking more line meant more control on the swing. My operator buddy Ray hopped in my cab during lunch and told me to try choking it up about halfway. First pick after break I felt the difference right away. The load stopped swinging way faster and I was not chasing the panel near as much with the stick. By the end of the shift I had knocked off around 20 minutes on my picks compared to the morning. Same load, same wind, same everything, just less line in the air. Ray said too much tagline acts like a pendulum and I never really thought about it that way. Anybody else running their line shorter than they used to, or am I late to this one?
Maybe it's just me but choking it up hasn't worked out that way for me. With less line the load whips around faster when it starts moving, so you gotta be quicker on the stick or you're just chasing it harder. Longer line gives you more time to react in my experience.
