Old school vs new school: hand signals or radios for tower ops?
I started out in the early 2000s on a crew where we did everything with hand signals, no radios allowed because the foreman said they were too distracting. Fast forward to 2019, I got on a site down in Houston where everyone uses headsets and it felt weird at first, like we were losing the personal connection. But man, after a week of not having to crane my neck to see the signal guy through dust and glare, I started to see the upside. Now I'm torn because radios cut down on miscommunication but they also let people chatter about non-work stuff during a lift. What do you guys prefer on your sites?
