Old foreman's two finger rule cut my lift setup time in half

Last month on a site near Tulsa, this grizzled foreman watched me spend 20 minutes leveling outriggers with a laser. He walked over and said 'kid, two fingers on the load line tells you more than that gadget ever will.' He meant checking the slack and angle by feel before trusting the readout. Now I do a quick manual tug on the cable before every pick, and I've caught two bad placements that the sensors missed. Anyone else got a low tech trick that beats the fancy stuff?
