My uncle told me to always check the boom angle before a big lift, and he was right
He was a tower crane operator for 30 years in Chicago. Last week, I was setting a 5-ton AC unit on a roof and almost tipped because I didn't account for the slight grade. His voice popped into my head, I stopped, and re-leveled. Has anyone else had a close call saved by a simple check they almost skipped?

Honestly, how big of a difference does a small grade really make? Tbh, it seems like a tiny thing that gets blown out of proportion. I guess it's better to be safe, though.

Wait, you really think it's a tiny thing? @thompson.xena, a small grade difference can totally change how a roof handles water. That little bit of slope decides if water runs off or just sits there and leaks. It's the whole point of having a slope at all. Getting it wrong means big problems later, like rot or a collapsed ceiling. It's one of those details you absolutely cannot skip.

Totally agree with the "big problems later" part. I rushed a shed roof once and skimped on the slope to save time. Two years later I had to replace the whole roof deck because water pooled and rotted it out from the inside. That tiny grade is what makes the water leave instead of hang out. What kind of roof are you guys talking about?
