My foreman told me I was binding the load wrong on a job in Phoenix last month
Honestly I've been running cranes for 3 years and thought I had it down, but he pointed out my tag line angle was off by about 15 degrees which made the swing sketchy. I started adjusting it based on wind direction and now picks feel way smoother even in gusts. Anyone else get a small tip from an older hand that totally changed their setup routine?

Wait, you mean tag line angle actually matters that much? I used to just let it hang however and never thought twice about wind direction. But after watching a old timer adjust his setup on a rooftop job I started paying more attention. Now I set up with a slight offset into the wind and the load barely spins compared to before. Small tweak but it really changed how clean my picks look.

Oh wow, you really hit on something there. That old timer probably saved you a lot of frustration just by showing you that one tweak. It's funny how such a small change can make a world of difference. I've been on jobs where the wind was just relentless, and a load spinning out of control is the last thing you want. It's not just about looking clean either, it's about safety for everyone on the ground. You're right to pay attention to that, it shows you're thinking like a pro.

Respectfully, I see it a bit differently. I mean, yeah tag lines matter, but I've seen guys get so focused on that one angle they forget to check if their choke is even seated right first. The wind adjustment is fine and all, but the basics like proper hand spacing and a good knot underneath the hook probably do more for safety than chasing the perfect 15 degree offset.
