Lost a $12,000 contract because I skipped the daily crane inspection log last Thursday

I had been running that mobile crane for 3 years without missing a day, but one windy Thursday I got lazy and didn't fill out the log, then the site supervisor walked by and found the gap, now I'm out of work until the paperwork gets sorted out - has anyone else had an inspection paper trail come back to bite them?

Hold on, let me play devil's advocate here. You skipped a mandatory safety check for a piece of equipment that could kill someone if something went wrong, and you're surprised the site supervisor took it seriously? In my experience, that paper trail is the only thing standing between you and a lawsuit when a crane cable snaps or a boom fails. Your three years of good work don't mean much if one gap shows you're willing to cut corners on safety. Take this with a grain of salt, but a $12,000 contract feels like cheap tuition for learning why those logs exist in the first place.

Laughing at myself here, but I once got so caught up in "I know this machine like the back of my hand" that I skipped a pre-op check on a forklift. Turns out the back of my hand doesn't know about the brake line that was literally dangling like a loose shoelace. Nearly rolled that thing into a shipping container full of $50k parts. Lee's right, that paper trail is your only real friend when things go sideways.
