Chose seat time in the cab over chasing a bigger check on a tower in Dallas
Back in 2016 I had a shot at a tower gig in Dallas that paid about $4 more an hour, but I stayed with the old truck crane outfit running a 90 ton rig because the guy training me, Ray, actually let me run the controls instead of just rigging all day. Spent two extra years on that crew and got signed off on lattice booms and pile driving, which is what I actually needed on my card. The Dallas crew folded a year later anyway. Has anyone else passed on the money to get the hours, or did I just get lucky?
Man, that is the same thing I see at the store with the young guys, they jump at the first job that pays a buck or two more and then they are stuck because they never learned the thing that actually moves them up. The folks who stick around long enough to get real training end up way ahead down the road, even if the bank account looks worse for a while. You got the hours AND the sign-offs, and the Dallas crew folded anyway, so what did you really give up? Sounds less like luck and more like you read the situation right.
