70% of tip-overs are outrigger setup? that changes how I check pads
I was killing time between jobs and read through the 2023 OSHA crane accident data. Turns out, about 70% of mobile crane tip-overs happen when the outriggers are only partially extended or set on soft ground. I figured most were from overloads or wind, but it's the setup stuff that nails everyone. Last Tuesday we had a guy on our crew skip the cribbing under his rear pad on a gravel lot, just to save 20 minutes. Nothing happened, but that stat made me rethink how loud I get about checking every pad before the first pick. I've run a 100-ton Grove for 14 years and honestly never looked at that number before. Anyone else run into a site where the foreman pushes back on outrigger mats, or is that just us?
