Spent $75 on a fancy variable font tool and still hand-kerned 40 pairs myself
Last month I dropped 75 bucks on a variable font editor with auto kerning, thinking it would fix the spacing on my icon set in one click, and honestly the auto pairs looked worse than my rough draft. I ended up going back through all 40 glyph pairs by hand in Glyphs, which took me two nights, and the tool's just sitting there. Does anyone actually trust auto kerning for icon fonts, or do you all just fix it manually like me?
Oh man, same here! I bought a kerning plugin last year that was supposed to learn from my manual spacing, and it somehow made my arrows and chevrons drift apart even worse. Two nights by hand is the only way for icon sets, since auto tools just don't get the optical stuff that small shapes need.
