Serious question, did anyone else learn about font hinting way too late? I felt like a total fake
I was building a little pixel font for a game jam back in 2022, and I thought I was hot stuff because it looked sharp in my editor. Then I sent it to a friend and he said the letters looked like mush on his old Windows laptop. I had no clue what hinting even was. I spent the next two weekends reading old blog posts from the 90s about manual hinting, and I felt so dumb. All those little instructions that tell the renderer how to snap pixels to the grid? I had been ignoring them completely. My font still looks rough on small sizes, but at least now I know why. Does anyone have a good resource for auto hinting that does not cost a ton? I am not trying to spend $300 on a tool right now.
