Hot take: a font workshop in Oakland split our table on whether to hand-tune curves or let the script do it
Last weekend at a small type meetup in Oakland, a guy showed his workflow for auto-generating curves from a skeleton, and half the room said it saved him days while the other half called it cheating. I tried his script on a 24-glyph set of lowercase letters, and the joins on my 'a' and 'g' came out lumpy so I redrew them by hand anyway. One designer there told me, 'the pen is the pen, the code is just a faster pencil.' Now I can't decide if I should keep pushing the script or go back to nudging points one by one. Where do you all land on this?
My hand-tuning skills are so slow the script would probably finish my whole font before I got through one 'g'. Honestly the lumpy joins might just be the code's way of saying it needs a human eye on the tricky parts.
