Three weeks to fix a sunken manhole that turned out to be a buried washing machine

Small commercial site in Tacoma, we were grading for a new parking lot. One corner kept sinking no matter how much base we packed. Surveyor came out twice, we added 4 tons of gravel, still sagged. Finally rented a mini excavator and dug down 5 feet. Found a top-load Maytag from the 80s under the old fill. Someone backfilled a remodel years ago and just left it. Took 19 days of head scratching for a 40 minute excavation. Anyone else ever find something weird buried on a job site?
