The one subcontractor who showed me a better way to read blueprints

I was on a job site in Denver about 2 years ago, framing a new office building. This older electrician, maybe 65, walked over while I was staring at a confusing section of the MEP drawings. He didn't say much, just pointed at a single note in the corner I had skimmed over. 'That changes where your chase walls go,' he said. I had been ready to build them in the wrong spot, which would have cost me a full day of rework and maybe $800 in materials. He saved my butt. Has anyone else had a random trade worker drop a piece of knowledge that totally changed how you look at a set of plans?

Man, those random tips from old timers hit different. I had a drywall finisher once show me that the secret to getting a smooth corner is not in the mud but in how you cut the tape. I spent two years just smearing mud on like a fool before that guy walked by, grunted, and saved me from looking like a total amateur. It's always the quiet ones who know the real tricks, the ones who have been doing it so long they don't even think about it. Makes you wonder how many other basic things we're all messing up just because no one stopped to say, 'Hey, you're doing that wrong.' Glad you caught that before the walls went up, that would have been a rough day.

Right? That's exactly how it goes. I had this old carpenter show me that the trick to a straight cut on a miter saw isn't the saw itself but making sure you hold the board tight against the fence. I spent years fighting with crooked cuts and blaming the tool before this guy just watched me for a second and was like "loosen your grip, push it flat." It's wild how the smallest thing can make or break your whole day. Makes you realize how much we all just wing it until someone with calloused hands sets us straight. That kind of shortcut is worth its weight in gold.
