Rough week on the Meridian job, laid off 3 guys by Friday

Last week on the Meridian retail build we lost two full days to rain, then the drywall crew showed up a day early with no notice. I had to choose between keeping the schedule or eating $4,800 in overtime, so I cut the slower guys loose. The remaining crew hit 120% production the next day, but now I'm wondering if I should have just pushed through the OT. Anyone else had a week where firing people actually made the job run smoother, or did I just get lucky?

Cutting the slower guys loose to hit 120% is a short term win, but you just trained the rest of the crew that nobody's safe. That fear works for a week, then they'll burn out or start covering their own asses instead of watching each other's backs. You might've saved $4,800 now, but you'll pay for it in turnover and rework down the line.
