Pencil whipping my daily logs cost us $18,400 on a change order in Boise
I used to write stuff like "framed walls, poured footings" in my daily reports because who has time, right? Then a contractor in Boise disputed a 3 week delay claim on a job, and the owner's rep pulled my logs and found nothing useful in them, not a single weather note, crew count, or inspection detail. The change order got denied and we ate $18,400, so now I write full logs, but how detailed do you all get with yours before it starts feeling like overkill?
What about the photos though, not just the text? Everyone talks about writing more words but nobody mentions that a log with a time stamp on pics is basically untouchable in a dispute. I started snapping three or four shots a day, one of the whole site, one close up of whatever got done, and one of the sky or a thermometer if the weather was bad. When that rep asks why week two was slow, you don't argue, you just hand over a photo of a flooded footing trench from 7am Tuesday. Words can get twisted or called vague but a date stamped image of standing water doesn't leave much room to argue.
