Just found out from an old superintendent that the average construction project gets hit with 8 to 10 change orders from the owner alone by the halfway mark.
Pulled that stat from a McGraw Hill study I stumbled on last night and now I'm wondering how much of my own time I've wasted over the years trying to stick to a fixed budget on residential remodels in Boston who's dealt with this kind of chaos regularly?

Oh wow, that stat sounds a bit off to me. I mean, the McGraw Hill study from 2015 only said 6 to 8 change orders by then, not 8 to 10. Maybe it's just me but double-checking that number might help your research.
