GC on my first big job asked for a 3 week look-ahead and I gave him a 30 day one
I was running the submittal log on a $2.4M school addition in Fort Worth and the GC pulled me aside at the Thursday OAC meeting saying my look-ahead was too long for the field guys to actually use. I rebuilt it into a rolling 21 day board with color coded critical items and posted it in the trailer where the supers walk by every morning. Anyone else had to train a PM that shorter windows get more buy in from the trades?
Getting the supers to actually look at the board is half the battle. I had one job where the look-ahead was 45 days and it just sat there because nobody could find their trade on the page. Once we cut it to three weeks and put the critical path stuff in red, guys started checking it before their morning huddle. A GC once told me the trailer wall is the real project schedule, not the one in the binder. Short windows work because crews can only plan so far out before it turns into guesswork.
