Why does nobody talk about the 3,000 mile oil change myth?

I hit 3,000 miles on my 2018 Honda Civic last week and my buddy Dave, who works at a shop in Tucson, flipped when I said I was changing the oil. He showed me the owner's manual and it says 7,500 miles for full synthetic, but every quick lube place still slaps that 3,000 sticker on. I ran the math, that's like an extra $120 a year in unnecessary changes for me. How many people are just blindly following that sticker for years without checking their actual car specs? Has anyone else pushed back on a shop about this and gotten a weird look?

...and the quick lube places know exactly what they're doing. That 3,000 mile sticker is just job security for them. My last car went 8,000 between changes on synthetic and ran fine for 180,000 miles. Dave's right, read the manual, trust the engineers over the guy trying to upsell you a cabin filter. I've told shops no thanks on the early change and yeah, they look at you like you just insulted their dog. They'll live.

...and that's exactly why the quick lube places make the big bucks, because people like @alicebarnes think they're gaming the system while their engine is slowly eating itself. Synthetic oil may last longer on paper, sure, but that 3,000 mile change is cheap insurance against sludge building up when you're sitting in stop and go traffic for an hour every day in Tucson summer heat. I've seen engines that went 8,000 miles on synthetic and they were fine, but I've also seen ones that weren't, and nobody checks their oil level as much as they think they do between changes. The manual writes for perfect conditions with perfect driving, not real life where you might be idling forever or running shorter trips that never let the oil fully heat up. So yeah, maybe the sticker is a little overkill for some people, but spending an extra hundred bucks a year to not be the guy with a wiped camshaft at 80,000 miles sounds like a fair trade to me.
