Tried to patch a hole in drywall with a $5 spackle kit and it crumbled into dust 2 days later

My cat launched herself through the wall last Tuesday chasing a bug, so I grabbed a cheap premix spackle from the hardware store. The patch fell out as soon as I tried to sand it, leaving a bigger mess than the hole. Has anyone else had luck with those all-in-one repair kits or are they just scams?

Oh man, "crumbled into dust" is EXACTLY what happened to me too. I bought one of those little plastic tubs with the spreader included and it looked fine until I touched it, then it just fell apart like a dried mud pie. Those cheap kits are an absolute scam, they barely hold up long enough to dry let alone get sanded without destroying everything.

That's exactly what happened with mine too. I got one of those little tubs with the pink lid and the tiny plastic spreader included. It looked fine when I put it on but the next day it had cracked and half of it had fallen out before I even tried to sand. I ended up having to chip the rest out with a butter knife and start over. Complete garbage, those cheap kits are just a way to steal five bucks from people who don't know any better. I will never buy another one.
