Spent $300 on a so-called 'waterproof' metal detector and it died after two trips to the beach

Waterproof" basically means "survives a light drizzle now" in most product descriptions. Seems like everything from bluetooth speakers to outdoor gear uses that word way looser than it should be.

You've ever actually tried to get a company to honor a "waterproof" warranty on a Bluetooth speaker? Its like pulling teeth. I had a JBL that said it was IPX7 rated, took it to the beach and it got a little sand in the charging port and they claimed that counted as water damage. The whole rating system is just marketing now, IPX7 just means it survived a 30 minute dunk in a lab, not that it handles real world use like salt water or drops.
